Abel Flash Point Testing

The closed cup test assesses the potential hazards of liquid in a restricted space which have a flash point of between -30.0°C and 70.0°C, inclusive. A test portion is introduced into a cup that has a closed lid at the top. An ignition source is passed vertically through an aperture in the lid into the vapour space over the test portion being heated, to test if the vapours ‘flash’.

Typical products tested by the Abel include: aviation turbine fuel, kerosene, solvents and chemicals. The Abel test is the referee flash point test for aviation turbine fuel (Jet A-1) specified in Europe and most of the world (except North America).
