MEASURING THE PERCENT OF BIODIESEL IN DIESEL FUEL

Estercheck determines the volume of FAME in a batch of BioDiesel

Blending ethanol into petroleum diesel and gasoline is now commonplace in many countries. B6 to B20 BioDiesel blends are covered by ASTM D7467 fuel specification.

Blends of 20% BioDiesel and lower can be used in diesel powered equipment with few if any modifications to the engine, however certain manufacturers limit their warranty liability to specific maximum blends.

For fuel producers and blenders it is important to be able to determine the precise volume of FAME in each batch of BioDiesel. Failure to accurately determine this may lead to financial penalty, liability claim and loss of market confidence in the fuel supply. Those storing and distributing fuel have the same liabilities.

Determination of FAME in BioDiesel simplifies the analytical requirement because just one wavelength spectrum needs to be measured, as a result less complex IR technology can be adopted allowing simplified test instrumentation to be used.

Estercheck is a unique and proprietary instrument jointly developed by SETA and a leading UK University. It uses micro mid-range IR which is built into a simple hand held measurement platform. This provides measurement accuracy down to 0.2% FAME content.
